It’s safe to say that not too many people look forward to their dentist appointments. For children who are going to the dentist for the first time, it is very important that you prepare them for what is going to happen. Try explaining to them that every person has to have their teeth looked at on a regular basis to prevent tooth decay. Tell them what is going to happen there and why it is so important. Stay with them during the entire appointment, If they know that you are there by their side protecting them it will give them a lot of confidence.
It may also be a good idea to take them to the dentist before the appointment. Introduce your child to the actual dentist that will be doing the work. This may put them at ease during the appointment, since they will see the dentist as someone they already know and trust.
The more you prepare your child for their first dentist appointment, the smoother it will go. Get to know your child’s fears and explain why they are unwarranted. Are they scared it will hurt? Let them know it won’t. Do the lights, machines and tools scare them? If so, then take a few minutes to familiarize them with the dental equipment. In the end, their first dentist experience will have a lot to do with how well you handled preparing them for it. So take your time. Answer their questions, and let them know that you are there for them no matter what.
