Proper dental care is crucial for anyone interested in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Routine check-ups are a necessity when it comes to proper dental care because dentists are able to detect potential problems before they become serious and require expensive procedures in order to be corrected.

Part of proper dental care starts at home with a healthy routine for cleaning the mouth and teeth. Developing good dental hygiene is simple and is necessary in order to prevent tooth decay. One of the important parts of home dental care is monitoring the amount of sugar the teeth are exposed to. That means avoiding foods and drinks that are high in sugar content such as candy and soda. It is recommended that the teeth be brushed immediately after the consumption of sugary snacks and beverages.

Another requirement of good dental care is to brush teeth at least twice a day. This means brushing in a proper way and long enough to reach each portion of the mouth including; teeth, gums, tongue and roof of the mouth. Proper brushing eliminates bacteria that causes tooth decay. Brushing in a circular motion is the correct technique for brushing. Using a cavity preventing toothpaste with fluoride is also helpful in the fight against cavities and part of proper dental care regimen.

Flossing is the next step in proper dental care. Flossing eliminates particles of food and plaque along the surface of the teeth covered by the gums. Rinsing the mouth with a good antiseptic mouthwash is a good habit to get into since it sterilizes any leftover bacteria.

Along with proper dental care it is necessary to visit a dentist about every six months for a checkup and proper dental cleaning by a dental hygienist. The dental hygienist does a thorough, deep cleaning of the teeth which aids in the prevention of tooth decay. Proper dental care greatly reduces the chance of developing cavities and gum disease and helps patients avoid expensive corrective action.

All parents are looking forward to the first tooth of their child. The first tooth can typically be expected between the 6th and 8th months many babies develop teeth even earlier.

Eruption of teeth can be a simple and painless process for some children, while others find it difficult. Many children suffer from fever, diarrhea and upset stomachs. All children have increased secretion of saliva causing excessive drooling.

Sometimes a child will develop a gum infection during teething. When that occurs it is recommended that the gum is coated with chamomile tea, sage tea, or with a 3% hydrogen solution. There are also several types of oral gels which can be used to calm the inflamed gums and act as local anesthetics.

During tooth eruption it is recommended that items be provided to the child which they can chew on. These items must have a solid, yet slightly pliant texture. A wide assortment of baby teething rings can be purchased in most stores. Many recommend the use of cold carrots or deveined celery.
The first teeth to erupt will be the two lower middle teeth followed shortly by the two upper teeth. In the first year of life a child will usually sprout eight incisors.

The first permanent teeth will appear around the sixth year. Typically starting with the lower incisors. Around the 8th year the premolars will make their appearance. The second permanent molars and the canines are the last teeth and will arrive around the 11th and 12th years. The wisdom teeth can occur anytime after the 16th year. It is not uncommon for wisdom teeth to remain missing or get blocked in the jaw, when that occurs it is called impaction. Impaction will require dental intervention.

It is important that your child visit a dentist around the fourth year so that they can correctly assess the development of your child’s teeth and make any necessary corrections before the permanent teeth begin to form.

To clean your teeth correctly it is important to have a good toothbrush. A good toothbrush is inexpensive when compared with the cost of dental procedures. There are countless brushes in all forms currently available on the market. Choosing the best toothbrush for you begins by selecting the proper fibers, they are the most important because your tooth will frequently come into direct contact with them. You must also pay attention to the type, shape and arrangement of fibers prior to purchasing each brush.

Toothbrush fibers are made from nylon and /or polyester and come in hard, medium and soft. The fiber is used to remove plaque from the surface of your tooth. Hard and medium fibers can permanently damage the gums and tongue. Hard fibers can cause excessive wear on the tooth enamel causing periodontal disease, they can also damage some fillings. A soft brush removes the plaque as effectively as the hard and medium brushes.

The shape is also important. Brushes with sharp peaks can be more destructive to soft mouth tissue than the rounded brushes. The shape and size of the brush must also be able to effectively reach the back of your teeth and the teeth at the back of the mouth.

The fibers of your toothbrush should be distributed as dense as possible to allow for maximum plaque removal.

Worn brushes quickly loose their effectiveness. A new brush is 35% more effective than the a used one which is why it is recommended that your toothbrush be replaced every 2-3 months.

Life in the 21st century provides opportunities where any body or facial defects can be completely removed, and teeth are no exception. A person can get a brand new smile which will completely change their appearance.

Teeth whitening is the most commonly used dental method. It involves the application of a bleaching gel on the teeth. Dentists protect the soft tissues and activate the gel using a laser. The procedure is short, painless and provides an almost instantaneous effect. In severe cases of discoloration this procedure may have to be repeated.

Teeth whitening can be also done with professional quality at home. The procedure starts in the office by taking imprints to create forms for the teeth. These forms serve as carriers for the whitening gel at home. This procedure is very safe and simple because the whitening gels are a lower concentration, which does not damage the soft tissue. After a short training session in the dental office, a patient can very easily bleach their own teeth by using the gel-filled tray application.

This technique is relatively simple and less expensive than laser whitening. The at-home bleaching method does have drawbacks. This method requires patience because the results appear gradually and during the bleaching process it is necessary to completely abstain from smoking and the consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea and red wine. This technique is frequently used to maintain the results of a tooth whitening, because the effects may fade over time and require repeat treatment.

Always consult a dentist before beginning any tooth whitening regime, as many of the over-the-counter methods available may damage your tooth enamel. A properly certified dentist can determine which methods will work best for you.
